Uses For A/B Otic

Antipyrine and benzocaine combination is used in the ear to help relieve the pain, swelling, and congestion of some ear infections. It will not cure the infection itself. An antibiotic will be needed to treat the infection. This medicine is also used to soften earwax so that the earwax can be washed away more easily.

In the U.S., this medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

Side Effects

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: burning/stinging/redness/new pain in or around the ears.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: bluish skin, severe tiredness/weakness.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Antipyrine / benzocaine otic Pregnancy Warnings

Antipyrine-benzocaine otic has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have not been reported. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Antipyrine-benzocaine otic should only be given during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
